About this product

The Dagomba Luan (also called "Lunga") is an hourglass-shaped tension talking drum, variations of which are known more widely across the subcontinent as tama.

The Dagomba luan is usually bigger than the different talking drums encountered in countries such as Senegal, Mali, and Nigeria. Fastened on the shoulder with a scarf, the luan is fitted beneath the armpit and beaten with a curved stick. When the leather strings that lace together the two skins are tightened or released, the pressure changes the pitch―a spectrum of highs and lows.

This instrument is taught at the Bizung School of Music and Dance Program in Tamale, Ghana.
